The truth really is that she went away for a few years, exposed her true personality w/PR debacles insulting Americans and then people like Kate Winslet acted circles around her and raised the bar.

Yes, for a long time. So that was my model. I love picking them up from school, and I love cooking with them. It’s such a gift. I love what I do, too, but their needs are more important than my needs. I don’t need to be doing three films a year and be the biggest star.-

This is just her coping with the fact that she's never gonna have a leading lady career.  The sun has set on that dream but she just tells herself she doesn't really want the career.
So, she's basically saying that if she did do three films a year,she could be the best at it and she could be the biggest star.  I wonder who is the subject of this passive-aggressive dig...

Oh, and her mother never voluntarily took time off to raise her kids.  She was still trying to secure herself a steady job all along but it never worked out.  Here's her IMBd - Blythe Danner .  That's just mostly the filmography.  Her Wiki- Blythe Danner chronicles all the film, stage and TV work.  Gwyneth was born in '72, her brother '75 and as you can see she is working all along.  There's only one period in the mid to late 80's she slows down but her kids are older then and that places her in her mid forties, when roles were probably scarce.
